Salzburg, with its annual festival of music and theatre, is home to Mozart in every sense; you can visit the musical prodigy’s family houses, now
museums, and taste the chocolates he inspired – Mozartkugeln – a
rich confection of pistachio, nougat and chocolate. The Salzburg
Museum on
Mozartplatz – where else – vividly chronicles the resplendent,
baroque town. Traditional coffee shops, bierkellers and beer gardens are welcome
stops. Shopping is to be found on the attractive Getreidegasse and Linzergasse.
Take the Mönchsberg lift, beside the new Modern
Art Museum, for a reminder
of those awesome views. Back down to earth, the Mirabell Gardens is where
Julie Andrews sang ‘Do Re Mi’ in the classic movie The Sound of
Music.
Some of Austria’s most famous natural wonders are within easy reach
of Zell am See: Eisriesenwelt, the world’s largest ice cave, a 40km
long labyrinth dating as far back as 100 million years; the salt mines
in the mountains; the spectacular Grossglockner Alpen
Pass; Hohe Tauern National
Park and the thrilling Krimml Falls, fed by 13 glaciers. A more recent
attraction is Dachstein Ice Palace, creating a magical experience from sculpted
ice, sound and light.
Salzburg’s annual Christmas market (from November 24th) is an enchanting
event that draws visitors from around the world.
