The Ice Caves are a labyrinth of caves with a total length of over 40 km. As is the case with all caves, their formation spans a long period of time. The first cracks and crevices in the limestone appeared during the elevation of the mountains approx. 100 million years ago and over the course of thousands of years became more developed and extended as a result of chemical reactions and water erosion. Caves in the Alps are still developing, although in many cases the process of drying out has limited their development.

Die Eisriesenwelthöhle ist ein Höhlenlabyrinth von über 40 Kilometern Gesamtganglänge. Die Entstehung erfolgte wie bei allen Höhlen über einen sehr langen Zeitraum. Die ersten Spalten und Klüfte im Kalkfelsen entstanden bereits im Zuge der Gebirgshebungen vor ca. 100 Mio. Jahren und wurde durch chemische Auflösungsvorgänge und Wassererosion über Jahrtausende hinweg vergrößert und ausgeformt. Die Höhlen in den Alpen sind auch heute noch in einem Entwicklungsprozess, wenngleich sich viele Höhlensysteme - auch große Teile der Eisriesenwelt – durch Austrocknung nicht mehr bedeutend weiterentwickeln.

The Stiftkeller St. Peter lies in the historic centre of Salzburg, nestled between the Cathedral and the Festival Halls. It is known as the oldest restaurant in Europe and was first documented in the year 803, during Charlemagne’s visit.
Also the Mozart family visited St. Peters Restaurant. In 1783 on October 28th “Nannerl” Mozart writes in her diary: “papa and henry had lunch at St. Peter….made music Rained heavily.” (quotation)
Mozart’s C-Minor Mass was first performed 1789 in St. Peter’s Church, lying adjacent to St. Peter’s Monastery. Mozart’s wife, Constanze, sang one of the solo soprano roles.
The 3-course Mozart Dinner is prepared according to traditional 18th-century recipes and is served during the intermissions. (Vegetarian menu also available!)

Im historischen Zentrum, eingebettet, zwischen Dom und Festspielhaus, liegt der Stiftkeller St. Peter, bekannt als das älteste Restaurant Europas und erstmals urkundlich erwähnt anlässlich eines Besuches von Kaiser Karl dem Großen im Jahr 803.
Auch die Mozarts verkehrten hier. Am 28.10.1783 schreibt „Nannerl“ Mozart in ihr Tagebuch: „papa und henry zu st. peter gespeist....musik gemacht. stark geregnet.“ (Zitat)
In der benachbarten Kirche von St. Peter wurde 1789 Mozarts berühmte c-Moll Messe aufgeführt, eine der Sopranpartien sang damals Mozarts Frau Constanze.
Die Zubereitung des dreigängigen Mozart Menü erfolgt nach originalen Rezepten des 17. und 18. Jahrhunderts. Es wird in den Konzertpausen serviert!

The Eagle’s Nest was designed as a birthday present for Adolf Hitler’s 50th birthday by Martin Bormann on behalf of the NSDAP (Nazi Party). Hitler in fact seldom visited the Eagle’s Nest. The allied bombing of World War II did not damage the Eagle’s Nest and thanks to the intervention of former Governor Jacob, the Eagle’s Nest was spared being blown up after the war.
Today the Eagle’s Nest remains in its original state. In 1960, on the occasion of the 150th celebration of Berchtesgaden’s incorporation into Bavaria, the Bavarian government relinquished its control of the building to a trust that ensures that the proceeds are used for charitable purposes.

The road from Obersalzberg to the Eagle’s Nest parking lot is considered a feat of engineering. The road was blasted out of solid rock in only 13 months time and is considered to be unique in this construction design. The great difference in elevation is achieved with only one switchback and crosses the steep northwest side of the Kehlstein mountain twice. In 1952 the Eagle’s Nest road was closed to public traffic and a special mountain bus service was put into operation. Through the frost and snow of winter, the rock walls of the Eagle’s Nest road are damaged from falling rock from above, therefore every spring the walls are "cleaned" and since 1952 have insured that no accidents have occurred.

Das Kehlsteinhaus war ein Projekt Martin Bormanns, das er im Namen der NSDAP Adolf Hitler zu dessen 50. Geburtstag schenkte. Hitler besuchte das Kehlsteinhaus allerdings äußerst selten. Die Bomben der Aliierten im Zweiten Weltkrieg trafen das Kehlsteinhaus nicht.
Dank des persönlichen Einsatzes des damaligen Landrats Jacob unterblieb auch die Sprengung des Hauses.
Das Kehlsteinhaus ist daher heute noch in seiner ursprünglichen Form erhalten und wird seit 1952 als Berggasthaus durch private Pächter geführt.
Die Zufahrt vom Obersalzberg auf den Kehlsteinparkplatz ist ein Meisterwerk der Ingenieurkunst.
In nur 13 Monaten wurde eine Straße aus dem harten Fels des Kehlsteins gesprengt, die in ihrer baulichen Eigenart einmalig auf der Welt ist: Der gewaltige Höhenunterschied wird mit einer einzigen Kehre überwunden, wobei die steile Nordwest seite des Kehlsteins zweimal durchquert wird. 1952 wurde die Kehlsteinstraße für den Individualverkehr gesperrt und ein Linienverkehr zum Kehlsteinparkplatz eingerichtet.

At 3,798m the Grossglockner is not only the highest mountain in Austria, it also counts among the highest peaks in the Alps. The pyramid-shaped Grossglockner lies behind the slightly smaller Kleinglockner (3,770 m), separated by a saddle-like formation known as the Glocknerscharte. The first ascent was in 1800 but victory and defeat accompanied other expeditions. The Pallavicini Trough is named after Margrave Alfred Pallavicini, who met his death on the Glockner in 1886. The Grossglockner and Pasterze Glacier have been owned by the Austrian Alpine Association since 1918. In 1951, Oskar Kühlken, author of the "Glockner Book“ described the myth behind the mountain as follows: "The Grossglockner is more than just the highest mountain in Austria. It is enveloped in the aura of an extraordinary personality, cast on all who fall under its spell.“ With the building of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road, the majestic peak acquired a new dimension. As a popular excursion destination it is the epitome of an impressive natural experience for many people: size and power can be felt here, one is subject to the fascination of the eternal ice and the elemental force of nature. The most famous alpine road leads you into the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park, to the highest mountain in Austria, the Grossglockner and its glacier, the Pasterze. You will have a driving and nature experience of a special kind on 48 kilometres of high alpine road with 36 bends, and an altitude ascent to 2,504 metres!


Mit seinen 3.798 m ist der Großglockner nicht nur der höchste Berg Österreichs, sondern er zählt auch zu den höchsten Gipfeln der Ostalpen. Dem pyramidenförmigen Großglockner ist der etwas niedrigere Kleinglockner (3.770 m) vorgelagert, dazwischen liegt die sogenannte Glocknerscharte. Die Erstbesteigung erfolgte im Jahr 1800. Siege aber auch Niederlagen begleiteten die Expeditionen. Die Pallavicinirinne ist nach Markgraf Alfred Pallavicini benannt, der 1886 am Glockner den Tod fand. Seit 1918 ist der Großglockner samt Pasterze im Besitz des Österreichischen Alpenvereins. Oskar Kühlken, Autor des „Glocknerbuchs“ beschrieb 1951 den Mythos dieses Berges mit den folgenden Worten: "Der Großglockner ist mehr als der höchste Berg Österreichs – ihn umstrahlt das Fluidum einer ungewöhnlichen Persönlichkeit. Wer in seinen Bannkreis gerät, wird davon erfasst.“ Mit dem Bau der Großglockner Hochalpenstraße hat der majestätische Gipfel eine neue Dimension erhalten. Als beliebtes Ausflugsziel ist er für viele Menschen der Inbegriff eines beeindruckenden Naturerlebnisses: Hier werden Größe und Macht spürbar, hier erliegt man der Faszination des ewigen Eises und der Urgewalt der Natur. Die berühmteste Alpenstraße führt Sie ins Herz des Nationalparks Hohe Tauern, zum höchsten Berg Österreichs, dem Großglockner und seinem Gletscher, der Pasterze.
