Salzburg, with its annual festival of music and theatre, is home to Mozart in every sense; you can visit the musical prodigy’s family houses, now museums, and taste the chocolates he inspired – Mozartkugeln – a rich confection of pistachio, nougat and chocolate. The Salzburg Museum on Mozartplatz – where else – vividly chronicles the resplendent, baroque town. Traditional coffee shops, bierkellers and beer gardens are welcome stops. Shopping is to be found on the attractive Getreidegasse and Linzergasse. Take the Mönchsberg lift, beside the new Modern Art Museum, for a reminder of those awesome views. Back down to earth, the Mirabell Gardens is where Julie Andrews sang ‘Do Re Mi’ in the classic movie The Sound of Music.
Some of Austria’s most famous natural wonders are within easy reach of Zell am See: Eisriesenwelt, the world’s largest ice cave, a 40km long labyrinth dating as far back as 100 million years; the salt mines in the mountains; the spectacular Grossglockner Alpen Pass; Hohe Tauern National Park and the thrilling Krimml Falls, fed by 13 glaciers. A more recent attraction is Dachstein Ice Palace, creating a magical experience from sculpted ice, sound and light.

There are few holiday places on the planet where you can’t play a few holes, but the experience here, with panoramic mountain vistas, is out of this world. Several championship golf courses are nearby, including two 18-hole courses at Golf Club Zell am See-Kaprun, plus spacious training area, between the Schmittenhöhe and Kitzsteinhorn mountains. Golf Club Salzburg – Brandlhof is an 18-hole championship course, where the small river Saalach has to be crossed up to six times during play. Urslautal Golf Club sits on a high plateau framed by mountains. Novices and experienced players cannot fail to enjoy the experience.

Walking, hiking or trekking – whatever your pace or distance – there are many well-kept and marked paths, with mountain huts for refreshment stops. The Grossglockner (Austria’s highest mountain standing 3,798m above sea level) and the High Alpine Road offers a breathtakingly dramatic and magnificent natural landscape. Both Zell am See Schmittenhöhe and Kitzsteinhorn have wonderful walking opportunities, as well as a huge choice of mountain sports and activities. The largest and hughest KONA bike park in Europe (!!) is situated in Leogang. The cable car includes bike transfer and there are tracks for all ability levels. There are over 740km of mountain bike routes and 480km of cycling trails along the valleys. You can really test your calves! Austria’s Alps are a top spot for competitive cyclists.

With its rich diversity, the whole of the Salzburgerland is one giant natural theme park! The Dachstein Ice Palace will enthall all ages. Here you can explore the mysterious realm of the glacier, whatever the weather. Its ‘Throne Hall’ boasts a sculpted representation of the Greek Acropolis. The Sensory Experience theme park and Leo’s Water World has over 25 interactive stations for a fun, family day out. Children will love the challenges posed by The Valley of Games at Saalbach Hinterglemm, which has over 200km of ski slopes as well as 400km of marked paths and 160km of routes for two-wheeled transport. The Alpine Therme Gastein is home to six adventure worlds within 32,000 square metres. Enjoy 360-degree Alpine panoramas, a sauna world with mountain lakes, a relaxation and wellness oasis, multi media dome, water slides and sunbathing areas.

Interested in architecture? The Bergisel Ski Jump, built in 1925, won the Austrian state prize for architecture. Salzburg is home to impressive castles, palaces and state cathedrals. A whole sparkling universe dazzles at Swarovski Crystal Worlds; the visitor shop designed by Terence Conran stocks watches, bags and jewellery. The Silberbergewerk Schwaz (silver mines) were once worked by 10,000 miners and originally made coins and jewellery that contributed to the immense Habsburg wealth. Music and art lovers will find exhibitions, Mozart recitals, opera performances or other music events attached to Salzburg’s festivals, the city also boasts a new modern art museum. Zell am See has plentiful attractions including a casino as well as fast action ice hockey matches. Exhilarating ski races take place in Kitzbühel.
